PC Support is available at both home and business levels, including hardware and software configuration issues, cleanup from Malware and Virus attacks, home internet connectivity, printer setup (those wireless printers aren’t always as easy to connect to as the manufacturers would lead you to believe), and other common and uncommon issues. Home network setup and configuration services are available, as well as configuration of Roku boxes and other similar hardware.
For business, full network services are available for Microsoft based networks. Before plunging in, you should evaluate what your needs are.The cost for a full-fledged network for twenty users can (or will) run into thousands of dollars, and in many cases is unnecessary. Lower priced alternatives are available if your only needs are common file sharing locations, printers, and basic user rights management. In this situation, NAS storage devices are available starting at prices under $400, depending on available storage capacity. Going one step further, Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials is a good compromise for small business with less than 50 users, since it offers full user management capabilities, printer sharing, and storage, without the additional cost for Client Access Licenses for the server, which typically is priced at $50 per user/seat. The software cost is under $500, and a variety of hardware/software packages are available from vendors such as HP and Dell. Finally, dedicated cloud servers are available through vendors such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, with a monthly cost based on server capacity and bandwidth. This is a good alternative for situations where additional capacity is needed for an existing network.
Backup Solutions - A Must For Business. If you go back ten years, the only choice was on-site backups, and in this case the greater part of the cost was the required hardware, especially with the dramatic increase in disk capacity. About 7 years ago online backup services emerged, most notably Mozy. While relatively easy to set up, there was one disadvantage – your data accessibility was tied to maintaining your account, and if you wanted to switch to a different provider, you essentially were starting from scratch, and also would have to restore any data that you might need that was no longer on your servers or desktops. Around 2014, various versions of Office became available via Office 365, in which payment was by a monthly fee, with no restrictions and installation on multiple PCs available with the same payment, with the typical situation being a Desktop and Laptop. In this case, a new version is available to you as soon as it is released. Currently, the pricing for the equivalent of Office 2016 Professional is only $8.25 per month with a 1 year agreement. This is obviously a much better cash flow situation than purchasing a new full version, especially if your payment is done with a debit card tied to a checking account. In addition to Microsoft Office, this payment model is also available for Adobe Products, including Acrobat and Photoshop, and the Quick Books online service.
Email - unless you have an extremely large number of users, I would not advise running your own email server. There are multiple reasons, including hardware, software licensing, backup, and what may be the greatest gotcha, a potentially massive amount of spam traffic coming into your network and impacting all other internet connectivity. There are various choices, including Google apps/corporate Gmail, Microsoft’s online Exchange email, which is also included in some of the Office 365 plans, and other providers, such as Silver Sky and Rackspace. Web hosting services offer various email services, but they can have many limitations, which can trigger situations, such as all services being shutdown , including your website, if the amount of email stored exceeds your package limits, or the maximum number of messages sent in an hour exceeding limits.
Web sites can serve a variety of functions, whether personal, marketing, an online store, blogging, or a complex online application, and a one size fits all approach isn’t realistic. Most sites are on hosting services such as Go Daddy, and in most cases this is more than adequate. However, these types of hosting services have different band width levels (amount of data transferred during a month), storage restrictions – which sometimes can also include email. This is considered shared hosting, where several web sites are hosted on the same server, and typically, maximum performance levels are dictated by cost.
In many cases, a basic static website, with no functionality other than sending a contact email message, doesn’t require anything more from a hosting service other than domain registration. In this case, the web site can be set up using Amazon Web Services S3 storage service, with a monthly cost less than a typical minimal hosting plan, provided someone is available to take care of the setup and configuration.
Hosting companies also provide a quick setup for common applications, the most popular of which is WordPress. In this case, the initial setup is quick and painless. However, in order to get more of a unique look, different templates or skins can be installed. These are available online with varying pricing, including templates with exclusive use rights, although I’m not actually so sure how genuinely unique these may actually be. Other popular packages include everything from remote time entry for employees, project tracking, and Content Management Systems, such as Drupal and the Windows based DNN. All of these have a variety of skins/templates for appearance, and modules, such as calendars, news listings, and simplified online stores.
Ecommerce sites, whether for a few items, or a complete store, are usually set up using modules for Content Management Systems, or a stand along package. An SSL Certificate, which is used to encrypt data between the user and the site. Certificate prices vary with the purpose. A certificate on a hosting service typically is supplied by the hosting service at a fixed price. If a site is self-hosted, more options are available. Basic encryption SSLs are available for less than $10 per year. However, any business with a larger volume of online sales should use a certificate which also includes organization identification information. The requirements for these require additional verification with a variety of options, including Yellow Pages listings, D&B, etc. In any case, your best bet is to either use a module as mentioned above, or a Ecommerce specific package, such as OP Commerce. OP Commerce is for Windows based web servers, which typically have a slightly higher hosting cost than Linux based systems. OP Commerce is actually a free package, with a paid support option, with costs being for setup and configuration, as well as training for adding items, etc.

The cost of this is much less than you might think, and you have no bandwidth restrictions or minimal monthly fee for the server. It’s possible to get a cloud server for a base price of $50 to $60 per month, plus outbound bandwidth costs. In the case of Amazon Web Services, a bulk email sending system is also available at a very low cost, with a large number of messages permitted, initially 10,000 per day. Finally, compatibility with Smartphones and Tablets cannot be ignored. What may look good on a wide screen monitor may be worthless on a Smartphone, or even a tablet.
